English for Medical Purposes

An English proficiency course for a well known Chinese medical university was developed for its medical staff, ranging from doctors, pharmacists, nurses and clinicians, four days a week for 10 weeks.

Over the 160 hours course that was specifically created for this unique group, the focus was on speaking and communicative skills, at the request of the university. The medics looked at and reviewed articles in medical journals, presented peer-reviewed publications in the form of poster presentations to a group of university lecturers - in English.

On the patient-facing side, we developed communicative skills loosely based on the medical exam style OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination), which was highly regarded by the group.

It proved that our subject-knowledge and know-how in creating and facilitating events with access to real, authentic materials, resulted in another very successful course.

English for Trade and Maritime Law

We were asked by a UK university to consult on their existing preparatory English course for international students about to enter on their Master's (LLM) degree.

We identified areas that needed updating with more recent methodologies, and created schemes of work that would be motivationally appealing and genre-appropriate to the cohort. The speaking and writing components were radically overhauled, and adjustments were made to writing and project work, all without affecting the portfolio-based assessment used by the institution. (See timetable)

Feedback from both students on the course and the university itself has been very positive indeed, especially for the CLEO analysis and new types of essay questions suggested, and the day trips we recommended... where else would you expect to find Maritime lawyers but in the sea!

New! Legal English exam training

We are pleased to be able to offer tuition for both ILEC and TOLES legal English exams, which can be done both online and in a classroom setting.

This is available to both individuals and legal firms who wish to accredit the English level of their non-native staff.

English for Trade and Maritime Law - STUDENT'S FEEDBACK

"I believe this programme is good to prepare for LLM course."
English for Rugby Referees and Coaches

A rugby-themed English language course was designed that would immerse the mixed language-ability group of semi-professional Chinese rugby referees and coaches with specific vocabulary. (See one pre-intermediate (Body parts) vocabulary worksheets, and two upper-intermediate worksheets on Referee Signals and Planning a Coaching Session).

The group succeeded in completing their relevant certificates in coaching and refereeing that would not have been possible without our classroom, gym and field-based input.

Military English

A cohort of soldiers from the Kuwaiti Army and Air Force arrived requiring English language tuition to help ease the communication problems that existed with the US army in the Middle East.

We provided language and cultural awareness training for the group over 10 weeks.

Curriculum Consultancy and Development

Curriculum development

We have undertaken a strategic review of several courses for private language schools and for a UK university. For example:

  • overhauling the methods of delivery by introducing or updating learning platforms to suit particular needs;

  • recognising weaknesses in teacher input/student output and recommending appropriate action;

  • creating suitable work to redress identified weaknesses;

  • acting upon initial and ongoing needs analysis;

  • providing or creating support materials.
